In the ever and fast changing employment market, knowing one
particular skill set is no longer sufficient to get you through the rising
demand from both customers and employers. Life-long learning has
become the buzzword of every industry.
In order to help aspiring retail employees increase their career
oppor tunities and cl imb up the career ladder, the Association
collaborated with Pro-Act Training and Development Centre (formerly
Retail Trade Training Centre of VTC) ten years ago in developing retail
courses of the Skill Upgrading Scheme (SUS) launched by the Labour
and Welfare Bureau.
SUS aimed at in-service personnel who wish to further enhance their
professionalism or engage in a new industry. Part-time and evening
courses are offered for different levels of employees.
Since its launch in December 2001, the scheme has successfully
offered 28 courses with 1,485 classes, benefiting a total of 31,835
students, who demonstrated an average passing rate of 96 percent in
all courses.
Subjects of fered include Basic Retail, Elementary Management,
Personal Effectiveness, Sales & Customer Service Excellence and more,
while importance in language proficiency was also emphasized, with
courses on practical Putonghua and English.
A highly interactive training approach was adopted, utilizing real-life
cases, group discussions, role-play, videos and experience-sharing
and mock workplace, to allow effective learning.
The retail industry section of the scheme was elaborately developed
and promoted by Pro-Act and the Association to ensure it is best
suited for the current market. To encourage enrollment, 70 percent
of the cost of each course was subsidized by the Government. Upon
completion of each course, students were presented an industry-
recognised certificate jointly issued by Pro-Act, the Association and
the SUS Secretariat.
Starting from 1 April this year, the scheme was re-launched as Skill
Upgrading Scheme Plus (SUS Plus) and undertaken by Employees
Retraining Board. For details about the courses, please refer to the
website: http://course.erb.org .
