Annual Report 2017 - page 40

To align our stance and position with other business sectors,
we have worked proactively with key trade associations
and chambers on major legislation issues such as the MPF
offsetting mechanism, standard working hours arrangements,
and labour importation advocacy.
We have also strengthened our media relations this year. In
addition to holding our monthly retail sales performance
media conferences, we invited all local media to a gathering
at the start of 2017. Through this informal get-together, we
generated extensive media coverage for the Association,
which has helped uplift our position as the voice of the retail
industry.
Grooming Retail Talent
Another core mission of the Association is to promote retail
professionalism and encourage lifelong learning among retail
practitioners.
The Earn & Learn Pilot Scheme for the Retail Industry launched
in July 2014 created an important first step to groom new
blood for the industry. Our members have rendered staunch
support since then by offering over 3,100 job vacancies to
the student workers. To further promote the Scheme, we are
collaborating with relevant NGOs to make use of their networks
to reach out to secondary schools and youth centres.
In tandem with the gradual pick-up of the market, we have
been pleased to work with the Government in reactivating the
Retail Industry Image Promotion Campaign during Q2 of this
year. This included a new API shown on television and new
content uploaded to the Government’s official Facebook and
website channel named “Retail Has It All”.
We have also continued to support the promulgation of the
retail QF this year, facilitating communications between our
members and the QF Secretariat, especially on the difficulty
in understanding and applying the QF accreditation to their
in-house training courses. Adopting our members’ advice,
the QF Secretariat is now developing three sets of training
packages to facilitate in-house programme accreditation for
retail companies. We expect to see more retail companies
applying for QF accreditation of their training courses.
We are pleased our annual Retail Conference has developed
into a must-go event for retailers to acquire the latest market
insights and exchange views. For this year’s conference, apart
from having some 6 heavy weight speakers, we were very
honoured that Google accepted our invitation to share their
views on e-commerce megatrends and their implications for
retailers at our luncheon. The whole-day event has received
encouraging feedback from over 500 participants.
