Message from the Chairman of HKRMA
香港零售管理協會主席之話
Mr. Thomson Cheng
鄭偉雄先生
I am very honored to have been re-elected as the Chairman for the term of
2016-2018 at the 33
rd
Annual General Meeting on 14 October, 2016. I am
grateful for the unfailing support and advice that I have received from my fellow
Executive Committee members. It is indeed a great privilege for me to serve
the Association and the retail industry. I would like to welcome all 28 Ex-Co
members for this new term. With their insights and support, I am confident that
the Association can further expand its scope of services and benefit the members
and the retail trade as a whole.
2016 has been a challenging year for Hong Kong. Despite strong headwinds,
the Hong Kong economy has proven to be more resilient than expected. A 1.9%
year-over-year growth was recorded in the GDP in the third quarter of this year,
which is better than the previous two quarters. The economic growth forecast
for the whole year has been adjusted to 1.5%, the mid-point of the 1%-2% range
forecast by the Government in August.
Hong Kong's retail sales value has been sliding for 20 months. For the first ten
months of 2016, the total retail sales decreased by 8.9% compared with a year
ago. However, the retail industry observed the smallest decline of the year in
October 2016 at 2.9%, mainly due to the improved tourist numbers that month.
The constant depreciation of the Renminbi has led to a stronger Hong Kong
dollar, which makes Hong Kong less attractive in the eyes of Mainland tourists.
Retailers have been responding to the downward trend in the retail market by
introducing several effective initiatitives.
The Association expects better retail performance in the coming festive season.
Depending on the performance of Q4, we forecast the retail sales value to drop
by 7-8% in 2016 as a whole.
While overcoming the challenges together, the Association continues to seek new
business opportunities for members. We have been working alongside prominent
local e-tailers and international players to build an online ecosystem to facilitate
the development of e-commerce in Hong Kong. The Association, together with
Alibaba Group and the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, organized the first-
ever "Taobao CEO E-Commerce Training Programme" in November this year.
This four-day programme, took place in Hong Kong and Hangzhou, included
seminars, visits to prominent e-commerce enterprises and experience sharing

香港於
2016
