The local retail industry, which has built itself a reputation for agility, has been playing
an active role and making changes despite tremendous obstacles. By this token, after
facilitating a termination of the international telecoms market monopoly in Hong Kong
with the debut of a long-distance telephone service through City Telecom, founded by
Mr. Ricky Wong in 1992, he set up in 1999 Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited
(HKBN) to provide high-speed optic fibre broadband, telephony and Internet protocol
television (IPTV) services. This was soon followed by the inauguration of Hong Kong
Television Network (HKTV) and its online shopping platform HKTV mall. He said that
each instance of innovation and making changes was driven by difficulties, and that
he now feels grateful when facing challenges. "I feel lucky that I am offered such an
experience. I used to be very arrogant three or four years ago. I would have become
haughtier if everything proceeded as planned."
He has never given up despite facing difficulties when running City Telecom, HKBN
and HKTV. "I have never thought of giving up. For years, I have been overcoming
different kinds of difficulties with flexibility and agile responses. At present, I deliver
speeches at schools every month and share my experience with young people. If I gave
up, I not only would have given up myself, but also would have set a bad example
to them. I strongly believe that there is still hope even though we are in the most
difficult situation." He noted that while the mainland China has seen a rapid growth
in its online shopping, it is necessary for Hong Kong to create its own online shopping
brands, or Hong Kong will lose its competitive edge.

面對種種挑戰。「很慶幸能有這樣的經歷,三
至四年前的我,仍是十分高傲自大,假若一切
順利,我會更不可一世。」
從城市電訊、香港寬頻,再到香港電視,即使
困難重重,放棄從不是選項。「我從來沒有放
棄這概念,這麼多年來克服眾多難關,都是憑
不斷走位,靈活轉變。我現在每個月也去學校
演講,與年輕人分享經歷,若我決定放棄,不
單放棄了自己,還會向年輕人立壞榜樣。我深
信,就算在最壞情況,仍會有希望。」他特別
提到,隨著內地網購發展迅速,香港也應打造
自身網購品牌,否則會失去優勢。

At the discussion, Ms. Caroline Mak, Chairman of the Association, raised a question
about upcoming challenges and opportunities. Mr. Francis Ngai said that global
warming and aging population are common challenges faced by human beings;
and that it is fortunate that more and more people are willing to take the first step
and increasingly attach importance to their shared values, which will offer us an
opportunity to change our future. Dr. Stella Kwan said that in the face of increased
market competition, it is essential that local retail and tourism industries should
heighten the appeal of Hong Kong through creativity. Ms. Fion Ipp added that, in the
wake of advancement of information technology, staff members of the new generation
cherish different value orientations, and it is necessary that a company should match
such qualities with innovative corporate structures and management skills. Mr. Ricky
Wong viewed that one often experiences life in crisis, and that "true love shows itself in
time of need". He recalled a case where one of his staff members had withdrawn her
resignation decision on the day after that member of staff had done so, because her
family argued that an employee should work with the company together in times of
difficulties.

王維基認為,身處危機,往往可讓人
感受生命,體驗患難見真情,他曾有
員工辭職後翌日收回決定,因家人勸
他應與公司共渡時艱。
