Session 2: In Their Own Words: How Business Leaders Sail Through Ups & Downs
It is necessary for the retail industry to quickly respond to rapid technology development. Yet, no matter what era
they are in, there are opportunities and challenges that retailers often face. Adhering to principles and values is thus
the strongest support for retailers to deal with challenges.
Social innovation from Me to We
社會創新從Me到We
Mr. Francis Ngai, Founder & CEO, Social Ventures Hong Kong

Shared values may be an answer to various social issues such as widening gap
between the rich and the poor, and environment pollutions. A number of scholars
and business leaders have initiated innovative business models linking our society
with business. For example, economist Michael Porter has advocated Creating Shared
Value (CSV) among businesses, while management guru Phillip Kotler proposes his
"Marketing 3.0" concept. Business operations can also make contributions to our
world.
Many places around the world are exploring new business models, among which is
the development of social enterprises. Mr. Francis Ngai said that the purpose of setting
up a social enterprise is to promote social innovation and embark on the "Business
2.0" initiative. For example, he said, "Diamond Cab" provides accessible taxi service for
wheelchair users; whereas tenancy scheme "Light Home" encourages property owners
to offer their flats to let on a sharing basis by single-parent families in urgent need of
a dwelling place. He stressed that society and businesses can team up and create a
win-win situation. For example, he said, more than 1,000 eateries including hot pot
restaurants have joined the vegetarian campaign Green Monday. "It is a good case
exemplifying a win-win situation where business prospers when many vegetarians
were attracted to the participating hot pot restaurants." He called upon the public to
see things such as the word "Me" from a different perspective. It is because the word
would read "We" when viewed upside down, said he, and everyone would be happier
if one always sees things from the "We" perspective.
Michael Porter
CSV
Philip
Kotler
Marketing 3.0
Green Monday
Me
」的
Me
We
Panel Discussion: How do retailers make use of Big Data?
Big Data?
Moderator: Mr. Thomson Cheng, Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Retail Management Association
In addition to Omni Channel, Big Data has become one of the hottest topics
in the retail industry nowadays. Mr. Thomas Cheng, Vice-Chairman of the
Association raised a question: How Big Data can be made use of to facilitate
business development? Guests viewed that despite huge storage space
necessary for Big Data, which have seen a growing and ever evolving trend
among companies to apply it, and increasing channels for data collection, the
implementation of data-based decision-making approaches remains unchanged.
In analyzing the Big Data, it is very important to have good time management,
and to ensure that company strategies are followed through. Miss Tania Lau
added that, while putting an emphasis on Big Data, it is essential to pursue
Smart Data; and that unique marketing strategies can be formulated with precise
analysis of the data.
Omni Channel

Big Data

Big Data
big data
smart data
