Retailers - Summer 2016 - page 4

Moreover, the Government is planning to submit its proposal on the Municipal
Solid Waste (MSW) Charging Scheme for the Legislative Council's discussion by
mid-2017. The MSW Charging Scheme, which covers both the domestic and the
commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, will have a far-reaching impact on the
society as a whole. Recently, the Association organized a meeting between our
members and the representatives of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD).
On that occasion, our members shared with the EPD officials the current waste
collection procedures at their stores. They also gave some valuable advice on the
Government's implementation proposal, especially on the weight-based charging
mechanism suggested for the C&I sector. The Association will closely monitor
the legislation progress of the MSW Charging Scheme and will keep members
abreast of the development. At the same time, we encourage our members to
proactively express your views on this important issue, especially at the early stage
of consultation, so that the Government could take the fellow retailers' concerns
into consideration.
One of the Association's key initiatives is to facilitate local retailers to expand their
capabilities in omni-channel retailing. Hence, the Association has collaborated
with Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) over the past months. The "Proposal
on Enhancing Technology Adoption to Uplift Competitiveness of Hong Kong Retail
Industry" has been created and submitted to the Government in July.
In this proposal, we highlighted to the Government the opportunities and
challenges of e-Commerce for Hong Kong retailers, supported by a benchmark
study on the international development. We also outlined the prevalent retail
technologies adoption gap in Hong Kong and a set of recommendations with a full
array of proposed programmes.
While we are lobbying for the Government's support to sustain the industry's
competitiveness, we are also working with key e-Commerce players to launch
various exclusive offers for our members. Those include discounted online
marketing packages and e-Commerce training seminars or workshops. You may
wish to keep an eye on our website and e-Newsletter if you do not want to miss
any of them.
In addition, the Association has recently established an e-Commerce Working
Group which consists of retailers, e-Tailers and respective stakeholders in Hong
Kong. The Working Group aims to update the Association on the latest online retail
landscape and members' needs in regard to online business development. We hope
this Working Group can serve as a platform for members to share information and
best practice on omni-channel retailing, and to promote synergy in the course of
driving retail technology enhancement in the near future.
The election for the new term of office (2016-2018) for the Executive Committee
will be carried out at the coming Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled on
14 October, at the JW Marriott Hotel. We are honoured to have Mr. Gregory So,
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development, as our guest speaker at the
AGM luncheon. I am sincerely inviting our members to attend this important event
to show the Association your support and to take this opportunity to network with
fellow retailers and key representatives from the business community.
Since two of our flagship programmes, Service & Courtesy Award and Mystery
Shopper Programme, are in full swing, the upcoming months would be the most
hectic period for the Association. With the same goals in our minds, i.e. upholding
the interests of the industry, I earnestly look forward to the support from our
members and fellow retailers for many more initiatives and activities that will be
rolled out by the Association soon.
