Hong Kong's retail sales value has been sliding for more than 20 months owing
to the subpar global economic condition and the protracted slowdown in the
inbound tourism. The retail industry is now facing the "new normal" and retailers
are now striving to make adjustment to the changing business environment.
To sail through the challenges together, the Association organized a seminar
on 24 January, 2017 to update members and fellow retailers on the retail
prospect in 2017 and to explore new business opportunities.
Retail Outlook for 2017
At the seminar, Mr. Ricky Choi, Senior Economist of Bank of China (HK)
Limited viewed that Hong Kong's economy in 2017 will continuously be
fogged up by unforeseeable global economic circumstances. However,
he is cautiously optimistic about Hong Kong's retail performance with the
support of low unemployment rate, mild economic growth and stable local
consumption.
Ms. Karen Chang, Retail Vice President of Nielsen Hong Kong and Macau
shared five major consumer trends. These include the exponential growth of
online shopping in the Mainland, growing popularity of e-commerce in Hong
Kong, customers' interest in new and creative products, the growth of health-
cautious customers, as well as the search for distinctive shopping experience.
Ms. Kathy Lee, Director of Retail Consultancy of Savills (Hong Kong) Limited
predicted that the decreasing trend in shop rental will slow down in 2017
with 5% to 10% drop in prime street rental and 5% decline in shopping mall.
