Enhancing Hong Kong Retail Industry’s
Competitiveness
The past year has been a particularly challenging one
for our members and fellow Hong Kong retailers. While
the retail industry is bracing for a business downturn, a
few unfavourable factors keep on dragging down our
competitiveness.
During the reporting year, we were deeply affected by
the strong Hong Kong dollar, which reduces our appeal
to tourists. The economic slowdown and ongoing anti-
corruption campaign in the Mainland continue to hurt
our tourism and retail sales as well. At the same time,
the prevailing negative publicity brought by the protests
against Mainland visitors also damaged our hard-earned
reputation as the top tourist destination in the world.
Against this dismal backdrop, our Association has spared
no efforts in stressing to the Government the urgency to
take immediate action to rebuild our image internationally,
and to focus more on attracting high value-added
overnight visitors to Hong Kong. Concurrently, we have
also urged the Government to take appropriate measures
to address the many difficulties facing retailers arising from
the rigidly high cost structure while facing dwindling sales.
Store rents in Hong Kong are still some of the highest
in the world, making it unaffordable for many retailers to
continue with their businesses. As Mainland tourists’
spending power has weakened, the impact is most
noticeable in the sales of luxury goods. Many of these
brand owners are starting to push landlords to lower
their store rents, or simply close their stores in prominent
locations.
提高香港零售業的競爭力
對協會會員及香港零售同業而言,2014年
是挑戰重重的一年。儘管零售業已積極為
零售業市道下滑而籌謀,但數個不利因素
仍然拖低我們的競爭力。
於本報告年內,我們深受港元強勢的影
響,使香港對旅客的吸引力大減。經濟放
緩,加上內地反貪腐運動持續,繼續打擊
本港的旅遊業及零售銷售。與此同時,香
港作為蜚聲國際的旅遊勝地,那些針對內
地訪港旅客的示威,對香港的形象造成負
面影響,損害了香港得來不易的聲譽。
儘管零售業的市況堪虞,但協會依然竭盡
全力向政府力陳,當務之急是要重建本港
的國際形象,專注於吸引高增值的過夜旅
客訪港。與此同時,面對經營成本高企,
但銷售額不斷萎縮,零售商百上加斤,有
見及此,協會促請政府採取適當的措施,
處理零售商面對的困難。
在所有成本項目中,香港的商舖租金仍然
高踞全球,使許多零售商難以繼續經營。
內地旅客的消費力減弱,對奢侈品銷售的
影響最為顯著。很多奢侈品牌企業開始要
求商舖業主降低商舖租金,或乾脆關閉設
於黃金地段的商舖。
