Vice-Chairmen's Messages
Working in parallel, we have also joined efforts with the
Government and educational institutes to ensure vocational
skills and qualifications initiatives can match with the
industry’s development. The Earn and Learn Pilot Scheme,
jointly organized by our Association and Vocational Training
Council (VTC), and supported by the Commerce and
Economic Development Bureau (CEDB), signifies a major
milestone in promoting youth employment in retail industry.
Combining “vocational education” and “work”, the Scheme
allows young people to learn in the workplace and equip
themselves with all necessary skills to join the industry. We
are particularly pleased to have witnessed our members'
overwhelming support to the Scheme in the two consecutive
years since its launch in 2014.
Furthermore, the Association took the lead to introduce
the Education Bureau’s Business-School Partnership
Programme to our members. Under this Programme,
retail employers can enhance the public image of their
enterprise, and at the same time introduce our industry
to secondary school students, parents and teachers by
building a positive image. There had been very good
responses from member retailers as well as from schools
for the Programme.
To sustain the development of the retail industry, retailers
must respond to such challenges directly and quickly by
grooming a pool of high-quality retail professionals and
enhancing their application of technology.
Alongside manpower development, we are also repeatedly
calling for the Government’s continued policy support for
the application of technology in retail. With the launch of
the Retail Technology Adoption Assistance Scheme for
Manpower Demand Management (ReTAAS) during the
reporting year, we are glad that SME retailers can now apply
for funding from the Government to start their own projects
to enhance productivity and workflows by adopting different
technologies to manage manpower demand.
All these significant achievements are made possible
with members’ unfailing support and participation. Taking
this opportunity, I would like to thank members for their
commitment in the Association’s work. And, I look
forward to working with you in the year ahead to achieve
even greater success.
