Upholding Retail Education and Professionalism
2015 has been an eventful year for the Association and
the retail industry. While a number of unfavourable factors
continue to hinder the growth of the retail trade, the
Association is standing side by side with our members
and fellow retailers to face the challenges.
The Association holds fast to our vision to uplift the retail
industry’s professionalism. Despite the slowdown in
business, we should not lose sight of our competitive
advantage in providing excellent service to our customers.
During the reporting year, I took up the responsibilities
as the Chairman of the Retail Industry Training Advisory
Committee (ITAC) to promote the Qualifications
Framework (QF) to fellow retailers. And, I am pleased
to have witnessed the launch of the Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL) under the retail QF in December 2014.
Working alongside the QF Secretariat, the Association
is encouraging retailers to support their staff to apply
for RPL, which provides an alternative route for them to
obtain QF-recognized qualifications for the knowledge,
skills and experience already acquired. Through RPL,
retail companies can reduce their duplication in training for
existing staff while individuals can decide on their training
needs according to the RPL skill clusters. We expect
more retail companies and practitioners to apply RPL to
gain recognition of their relevant working experience in the
future.
