Report on Manpower Situation of the Hong Kong Retail Industry - Salary Trends for 2015

The Association conducts the Salary Trends Survey on a yearly basis to consolidate the latest salary trends of frontline and managerial staff of the Hong Kong's retail industry.

About the Survey
  1. The Survey was conducted in July and August 2015 with a total of 112 companies' participation, involving 6,233 retail outlets with employment of 144,922 staff.
  2. The latest salary data was collected from 3 frontline positions, namely, Sales Person, Store Supervisor, and Store Manager, and 2 managerial positions including Area/District Manager and Retail/Operations Manager.
  3. The participating companies were categorized into 10 types of retail businesses including Beauty/Cosmetic, Catering/Food, Department Stores, Electronic & Electrical Appliances/Telecommunications, Fashion & Accessories, Furniture & Home Accessories, Personal Health Care/Drug Stores, Specialty Stores, Supermarkets/Convenience Stores, and Watch & Jewellery.

Survey Highlights
  1. Around 95.5% of the participating companies gave salary increase to their staff in 2015. The average salary increase for frontline and managerial staff was 4.4% and 4.8% respectively.
  2. The Average Commissions were increased for Sales Persons (+12.5%), Store Managers (+7.4%), Area/District Managers (+14.3%) and Retail/Operations Managers (+20.1%). Average commissions offered to Store Supervisors registered a negative growth of -4.0%.
  3. Around 68.8% and 91.9% of the participating companies provided paid meal time and paid rest day respectively to their frontline staff.
  4. It was reported a 3% increase in the number of frontline vacancies from 7,790 in 2014 to 8,026 in 2015.
